For a moment he looked confused. The people on the screen were obviously happy. They were with their friends and family. They were with their parters, their spouses, their children, their parents. So why was his mom sitting there crying like a soap star?
I tried to explain to him this very complex situation.
"In California there are people who want to make it impossible for people who love each other very much to be married. They want to make sure that the only people who are able to marry are couples that have one man and one woman. They think that because some men love men, and some women love women, they shouldn't be able to get married. And that makes mommy very sad."
He thought about this for a minute and said "But why can't a man marry a man or a woman marry a woman? That's stupid." And he's absolutely right.
If a 5 year old gets it, why the hell can't the asshats who oppose this simple right catch on?

What a great video with a powerful message. I hope that one day, others can learn that love and marriage should be between two people. Who cares what sex they are.
