And like that, it's all over

After my 7:30am meeting with India, my 9 am meeting with England and a ton of emails, bug sorting and follow ups, I managed to squeeze in a visit to my orthopedic surgeon to hear the outcome of my MRI.

He was happy to report that he was right, I had a meniscus tear that required surgery to correct. He talked me through the procedure and the recovery. After a little discussion about our vacation plans (Mr, Dog, the kids and mine, not me and the doctor. We just don't know each other that well, it would be weird to be planning a vacation with him.) he suggested we go ahead and schedule it. He said we could probably squeeze it in tomorrow and if we did that, we'd still be able to make it to the Peace Corps reunion in California next weekend. And I wouldn't be the pain in the ass at the party on crutches.

So he walked me over to the surgery scheduling desk. And as we stood there, he asks, "What did you eat for breakfast?" A little strange, but I'd skipped breakfast, I just had coffee. With this information he says "Want to schedule for this afternoon? I think I can sneak you in after my last procedure." And so we did. Less than 5 hours after getting my diagnosis, I was going under the knife.

The surgery went off without a hitch. They removed the offending piece of cartilage and while they were in there, he cleaned up some other wear he saw. He says my knee is probably going to quit doing all of the annoying popping and aching it has done for ages. And he says that even with out the chunk of cartilage they removed, my knee is going to be fine. Granted, at some point way down the line, maybe when I'm 60 or 70, I may need to replace the knee but that's not a certainty. If I do need to get a knee replacement I'm going to ask for a bionic one that shoots lasers. I mean, what self-respecting 60 or 70 year old wouldn't love that?

And thanks to all of you for the kind words and wishes. I really appreciate it.

So, what's the recovery going to be like? It seemed from your writing that you won't even be on crutches...? Nice when it works out big-bam-boom like that and you don't have time for all the worries to creep in. Nice Dr. (maybe you should go on vacation with him!)

I should be off crutches after a few days. Since they removed the mechanical problem with my knee, I'm already able to bend and straighten it better and the pain is much less. I just need the swelling from surgery to go down, and a little internal healing to happen. It's pretty amazing. And yes, this doctor is AWESOME. Great bedside manner and a really good doctor to boot.

Oh yeah. A knee that shoots lasers. Just what I've been waiting for. I am just waiting to be old and not responsible for my actions. I have a lot of scores to settle........

Happy recovery!

Wow, it's amazing that he was able to just do it right away - most docs would have you scheduled out 6-8 weeks! I'm glad you're going to heal quick.

Wow, that is so awesome! Also, the fact that he cleaned up "other wear" in your knee is just simply amazing. Glad to hear you are on the mend! :)

Oh my gosh. What have I missed?! I hope you are better. Now I'm off to read your earlier posts.

Wow! Usually they make you wait forever for surgery. I'd much rather have it go like that, not as much time to get anxious. (Though 5 hours would be plenty for me to work up a panic attack over it!) Glad it's fixed, and I hope the recovery is quick.
