Making the effort

A while back I decided I'd had enough complaining about myself and I was going to do something about it. My efforts have been kind of half-assed, but not a total wash. One of the things I've been trying to do is regularly do my pilates DVD work out. Well I'm doing it, but regularly might be overstating things.

I started one morning when I happened to wake up before the kids. Mr. Dog was also up and when I popped in the DVD he gamely jumped in and followed the work out with me. It was fun. It seems that despite my general lack of physical activity, I am still more flexible than my husband. He also made a huge range of snarky comments that made me giggle as the instructor went on about moves that tone your "tushie" or worked your "power source". After we finished, Mr. Dog said we should be workout buddies and try to do this DVD workout together several times a week. All day long he went on about how good it felt.

The next morning, I forced him out of bed to do our DVD workout again, and his tune had changed a bit. He isn't a morning person. He isn't a morning workout person. He needed sleep. But I'm persistent, ok, stubborn as a mule might be more accurate, and he gave in. Once again he had me giggling at the workout and by the end he was glad I roused him.

Today, he's in bed, I did the DVD again but this time solo. Sure I got the same workout, but it wasn't as fun. I didn't get to be amused by his comments. Instead I noticed how much my carpet needs to be cleaned. Maybe I've undervalued the workout buddy relationship. Not only does a workout buddy have the potential to push you to exercise when you don't feel up to it, they distract you from your necessary housework.

I hear you about working out with people. I think that is why I like going to classes at the gym (step on Tuesdays and yoga/pilates on Thursday) because of the accountability. If I miss a class, I better have a reason why! :) Keep it up and you will notice a change.

Yes, please, anything to distract me from the housework! :)

Kick his ass out of bed. He will feel so much better afterwards. You can always make it up to him by doing some yardwork!

I definitely need a workout buddy. One who doesn't enjoy chasing cars and barking at the neighbor's cat...
