Back to this dead horse and other random stuff

This is going to be a little disjointed. My week has slipped by so quickly and I'm reeling that it's almost the weekend already. And next week, Wednesday to be precise, Big Dog will walk into his new school for his first day of kindergarten. I'm also rushing around looking for a full time preschool/daycare for Little Dog. Mr. Dog will be rejoining the working world shortly! I know, I don't think I ever mentioned that he was looking for a new job...I'm kind of weird that way. Didn't want him to think I was making it blog fodder. But I'm happy, thrilled even! Even if it means a mad rush and the panic of not knowing where Little Dog will be spending his days.

So on Monday I shot off emails about the tuition situation to three leaders in the Seattle Public Schools. I got a response from one. Now I understand that it is a busy time of year for the schools, but I also think it is within reason to get a "I have received your email" kind of response within a week. Hear that Superintendent? Hear that School Board member? I'm asking because I feel like I'm being ignored. And when you ignore this tuition issue, you are ignoring a serious imbalance in our schools. Are you cool with that? I know I'm not.
Next week I'll start calling and emailing the next tier of contacts. I'm kind of tenacious that way. I don't think they get that yet, but trust me, they will.

In other news, all this hubbub about Obama addressing the American population of school children is so strange. Why is it at all subversive for the sitting President of the United States of America to actually talk to kids? It's freaky how the conservative wingnuts are twisting this into some kind of evil plot aimed at warping their young minds. Guess what asshats, he won the election. He's the President, not some kind of cult leader. Not some "my way or the highway" extremist. In fact, part of his plan to better the nation is to improve education and empower the kids! I know, shocking that a president should even think twice about our nation's youngest members. Maybe you're just a little startled after 8 years of general neglect by the past administration, but there ya go. Want to keep your kids out of school, want to protest? Go for it. It just shows what hypocrites you are. Remember not too long ago when you'd freak out and start spewing the favorite insults "un-American" or "unpatriotic" if anyone even questioned the possibly illegal actions of your President? Yeah, I didn't think you did. Short term memory I guess. And if you look back just a few years George Bush and Ronald Reagan both had televised events targeted at school aged children. Sorry guys, your idiocy is showing!

And finally, let's briefly touch on health care reform. I'm sick of the fear mongering. Guess what, our system already sucks. It already rations health care. We already pay more than any other country and we do that while we exclude more than 47 million citizens from any level of coverage. The simple fact is that other countries pay LESS and get BETTER care. Seriously. I'd also like to point out that it is impossible to be a Nazi, a socialist, a fascist and a communist all at the same time. If you are going to a town hall meeting to rant and protest, at least learn what these terms mean. Recently a friend posted a link to an awesome article on health care around the world and the myths being perpetuated our of ignorance or fear about health care in other countries. I wish I could make it recommended reading for all Americans. If you're interested, please check it out.

think it is great that the president is addressing our kids! And not just because I happen to like the president. People are Nutty.

Very best of luck next week! California Schools have mostly started already, Rosa is missing her friends who have gone to K.

I was just in the main office of my school and a parent called in to complain about the speech EVEN THOUGH WE DON'T HAVE SCHOOL ON TUESDAY. Nutty indeed.

People are so bizarre. I think it is really cool that he wants to address the students. It isn't like he's trying to brainwash them, they have a teacher handout for guiding discussions of the address and it suggests such controversial topics as "What can students do to improve our schools?" and "What do you think it takes to be president of the united states?" or "Why is it important that we listen to the President and other important elected officials, like the mayor, members of congress, or the governor?"
Sounds like a pretty basic civics class to me. Why shouldn't they be talking about their role in improving things and the role of our elected officials? It's not like he's instructing them to go out and get facial tattoos or become a Hare Krishna. These conservative morons obviously have too much time on their hands.
